Labu Estate must be conserved as site for conducting research on rubber industry

Kampung Labu Estate in Mukim Labu, in the Temburong District is conserved as a site for conducting the first phase of a research project on rubber industry.  According to Head of Research and Study Committee, Pengiran Doctor Karim bin Pengiran Haji Osman, the Brunei Museums has listed the six acre Labu Estate, that still exists today, as one of the country’s historical sites and must be protected under the 1967 act.  The government has given its full support to the move and by January 2006, the Labu Estate was proclaimed as such.

Rubber used to be Brunei’s main industry contributing to its income for several decades. The Acting Temburong District Officer, Awang Haji Mohd. Abdoh launched the research project and subsequently viewed the exhibition and toured the site.  Also present were a member of the Legislative Council, Awang Haji Sulaiman bin Haji Ahad, the Acting Director of Brunei Museums, Awang Bantong bin Antaran, Penghulu Mukim and Ketua Kampung, officers and staff of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Museum Department as well as members of the Kampung Labu Estate Consultative Council.
