Discussion on social problems to enhance awareness in community on the issue

According to the statement released by the Community Development Centre, social issues common amongst teenagers and students are abuse cases including sexual abuse. The matter related to social problems amongst students was discussed in order to raise awareness in the community on the issues mentioned.  The discussion was held during the fourth session of the Education Caucus for the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Education Institute at UBD, Wednesday.

The Counselling Officer at the Community Development Centre, Dayang Hajah Siti Aynah binti Haji Mohd. Yaakub explained that from 1999 until now, 52 rape and incestuous abuse victims aged between 11 and 15 were recorded.  Apart from that, several other cases that have also been commonly reported are uncontrollable children and teenagers, loitering children and teenagers as well as free sex that is believed to stem from introductions through cyber and mobile chatting.  Meanwhile, the second facilitator, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Education Psychology, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Education Institute, Chandasaegran Suppiah said social problems have a wide scope where several factors can influence teenagers.  One of the influencing factors is family problems.

The Education Caucus of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Education Institute is a discussion session or public forum organised two to three times a year based on the topics analyzed by the lecturers at the Institute, UBD, officers at the Ministry of Education, educators as well as officers from government and non-government sectors.  The topic under discussion at the fourth caucus was aimed at raising awareness on social challenges among Bruneian students.  The session was chaired by the Dean of the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Education Institute, Doctor Poh Sing Huat.  The session was held at UBD.
